Starting as a Fighter

Weapons, defensive skills and the Warrior branches.

Your first steps

Build around a weapon you enjoy, then support it with accuracy, defence and enough stamina to keep fighting.

Mundane → Fighter · First learn Fighting

  1. Learn the entry skill while you are still a Mundane, then use Change Class in the Character panel.
  2. Choose one weapon family to start with. Inspect its requirements and learn the matching weapon skill before spreading gems across several families.
  3. Balance your weapon investment with defensive skills. Rest between fights and watch stamina before chasing another enemy.

Inspect a scroll before buying it. The linked skill entries include its teaching scrolls and where to obtain them.

Start in Hope

Obtain useful early scrolls through the town’s quests. See the full first-quest route for Nicholas and the other townsfolk.

  1. Rupert's Vermin

Ask Rupert about the vermin and accept his task before fighting. His farm is south of him; the Rat Hole is west. Kill the quest’s rabbits or rats in those locations, then return to Rupert. Use the reward scroll on your equipment area to learn Dodge I, then open Skills to check its gem requirements.

    • Kill 10 Rabbits or Rats in Rupert's Farm or in the Rat Hole

    Reward · 200 XP + Knowledge of Dodge I

  2. Holger's Challenge

When ready for another fight, ask Holger about his challenge and clear his cellar. Bring coins for the entry fee; check his dialogue before accepting. His reward choices teach different weapon families; pick one that suits the weapon you want to use.

    • Defeat the monsters in Holger's cellar

Choose a reward · Knowledge of Swords I or Knowledge of Axes I or Knowledge of Spears I or Knowledge of Crushing I

Starting approaches

Suggested approaches to try; no fixed attribute ratio or “best build” is implied.

Weapon and shield

Use Rupert’s Dodge I reward for evasion, then choose a matching weapon talent from Holger’s Challenge. Swords and Fighting use Agility; Axes, Spears and Crushing use Strength. Shield Use and Toughness use Constitution. Pick one compatible weapon and shield rather than splitting early gems across all weapon families.

Ranged fighter

Use a ranged weapon and its matching talent. Check the weapon and ammunition requirements in the Items guide, and carry ammunition before leaving town. Ranger is a later destination, not a starting class.

Choose your next attribute investment by a concrete goal: the next gem threshold in a skill you use, or an item you can obtain and equip. Leave room for defence and resource management as you learn what your character needs.

More gems can change an active spell’s power and difficulty. Open its full entry before allocating them. A scroll’s purchase requirements and a gem’s attribute requirements are separate.

Where the path leads

The Warrior route later divides into Knight, Weapon Master and Thug. Compare the descendants before advancing: a weapon specialist, a defensive fighter and a dagger-oriented character do not end with the same skill access.

The tree shows minimum levels and any required learned skill. Meeting a level alone does not bypass an earlier class or skill requirement.
