Starting as an Apprentice
Spell choices, soul colours and the Wizard branches.
Your first steps
Choose spells your soul colour allows, improve your casting, and learn how much power you can use reliably.
Mundane → Apprentice · First learn Magic Use
- Do Arno’s Talk about magic! quest in Hope to earn Magic Use I and a staff. Learn the scroll as a Mundane, then change to Apprentice.
- Check your soul colour before choosing an offensive scroll. The starting spell choices below show the actual scroll restriction.
- Learn Flare before planning the next class advancement. Try new spell and gem investments on familiar encounters before relying on them in a dangerous place.
Inspect a scroll before buying it. The linked skill entries include its teaching scrolls and where to obtain them.
Start in Hope
Obtain useful early scrolls through the town’s quests. See the full first-quest route for Nicholas and the other townsfolk.
Talk about magic!
A useful route for a future caster: talk to Arno, ask the named townsfolk about magic, then return to him. The Magic Use I reward is the learned skill you need to become an Apprentice.
- Ask Nicholas about magic
- Ask Sinistra about magic
- Ask Rupert about magic
- Ask Wynn about magic
- Ask Holger about magic
Reward · 100 XP + Knowledge of Magic Use I + Staff
Rupert's Vermin
Ask Rupert about the vermin and accept his task before fighting. His farm is south of him; the Rat Hole is west. Kill the quest’s rabbits or rats in those locations, then return to Rupert. Use the reward scroll on your equipment area to learn Dodge I, then open Skills to check its gem requirements.
- Kill 10 Rabbits or Rats in Rupert's Farm or in the Rat Hole
Reward · 200 XP + Knowledge of Dodge I
Your soul colour and spell choices
Choose your soul colour with both your first attack and your later area spell in mind. These five starting attacks are learnable by Apprentice. Their matching area attacks become learnable by Wizard, reached at level 25 after learning Flare.
White soul
Red soul
Green soul
Blue soul
Yellow soul
“First gem” is an attribute threshold, not a character level or the only requirement for learning a scroll. The class and soul checks still apply. Follow a spell link for its teaching scroll and where to obtain it.
Area attacks and later specialisations
Area attacks target a place in the world and can affect several enemies. Select the spell and follow the ground-target prompt. Start on a small group, watch your mana, and avoid taking on more enemies than you can survive.
The five Wizard area spells above remain available on both the Mage and Necromancer branches. The later spells below add class-specific choices. A spell’s effect colour is separate from the soul colour required to learn its scroll: for example, Lightning Storm has a blue effect but no soul-colour restriction.

Starting approaches
Suggested approaches to try; no fixed attribute ratio or “best build” is implied.
Single-target caster
Begin with an offensive spell your soul colour can learn. Invest toward that spell’s gem requirements and support it with Magic Use. Keep a usable fallback weapon and rest when your resources run low.
Build toward area attacks
Reach Wizard at level 25 after learning Flare. Your soul’s area spell becomes available there: Shadow Rain, Meteor, Earth Quake, Crystal Ice Field or Poison Rain. Plan Intelligence toward its first gem and support casting with Magic Use. Elementalist adds further area options later; Lightning Storm uses Faith for its gems.
Choose your next attribute investment by a concrete goal: the next gem threshold in a skill you use, or an item you can obtain and equip. Leave room for defence and resource management as you learn what your character needs.
Skills to consider
This shortlist is available to Apprentice in the current scroll catalog. It is a menu of choices, not a shopping list to complete. Attribute labels and first-gem thresholds below come from the skill data.

Where the path leads
Mage leads to Elementalist or Sorcerer; Necromancer leads to Black Reaper or Lord of the Lich. Compare their learnable skills rather than treating any route as an automatic upgrade over the others.
